An online conference between the Central Hospital of Wuhan and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust to combat Covid-19 by UK-Medu

China has achieved remarkable results in the fight against Covid-19, despite being affected since the beginning of the epidemic that soon progressed to affect the globe. The Chinese have since been providing support and assistance to the other countries in need while successfully preventing the spread of the virus in their country. UK-Medu was honoured to host an online conference on 8th April 2020 for the Central Hospital of Wuhan and the Salford Royal Foundation Trust. The conference aims to provide a platform for the Chinese doctors to share their valuable experience from combating the virus in order to help the doctors in the UK to better combat Covid-19 while promoting the Sino-British medical cooperation and friendship. A total of 57 medical experts and doctors of the respiratory, emergency, cardiology, gastrointestinal surgery and intensive care departments from the hospitals participated in the conference.

The conference was from 9:00 am to 11:30am UK time (16:00 to 18:30 Beijing time). Five experts from the Central Hospital of Wuhan were invited as the key speakers of the meeting, their topics covered:

  • How to optimize the process of fever clinic
  • Experience of prevention from hospital infection with COVID-19
  • COVID-19 case study
  • Treatment experience of severe patients with COVID-19
  • Diagnosis and treatment experience of emergency patients of gastrointestinal surgery during the epidemic prevention and control of COVID-19
  • Q & A session

During the meeting, experts from the Central Hospital of Wuhan emphasized that detection and isolation are the most important aspects of stopping the infection. They also explained the layout of the isolation departments which include two buffer zones to separate contaminated areas, potentially contaminated areas (semi-contaminated areas), and clean areas, which is the key to protect medical staff from nosocomial infections.

During the presentation, medical experts from Salford Royal Hospital were asking questions in the group chat.

The experts of Salford Royal Hospital also raised many questions, such as the relationship between pyrexia and prognosis, and the treatment outcome of patients using the ventilator.

The experts from Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust mentioned that the experience and concepts that were adapted by the experts in the Central Hospital of Wuhan were informative and beneficial for them in combatting the pandemic while the Chinese wished them all the best.

At the end of the conference, Mr Kevin Liu, Chairman of UK-Medu paid tribute to the healthcare staff of the hospitals for their effort to combat the virus with his utmost respect and gratitude.
